Oh No! Cleaning the Bathroom Drain Again!?!

It was me. I got the short end of the stick yesterday. What for? Cleaning out the drain in the bathroom. In my opinion, this is the most dreaded chore… even worse than emptying the dishwasher, which is definitely at the top of my list. Cleaning out matted hair, soap scum and toothpaste spit is seriously gross. However, it is one of those things that just has to be done from time to time.

In case next time you pull the short straw for this job, here are some tips:

  • Use an everyday household item, a wire hanger. Unwind it and create a hook to reach down and fish out some of the hair and goop.
  • Make sure to throw anything that comes out into the trash so that your drain will not immediately be clogged again)
  • You can use at home ingredients to create a solution to clean out the sides of the drain. Use hot water, 1/2 cup baking soda and 1 cup vinegar.  The first step is to pour the hot water, then pour the baking soda and let it sit. Next, pour down 1 cup of hot water. Let it sit again for few minutes with the top on (if possible), and then rinse it all out with more hot water.

If you do your best to clean out your drain yourself and it is STILL clogged there may be some deeper issues than just hair. It is possible that sanitary items or tree roots may have impacted the drain. If so, it is important to call a plumber such as the ones at Santa Fe Air to help you out.
