How HVAC Zoning Systems Work
The motorized dampers, thermostats, and control panel all work together to regular temperatures in each zone.
These guys are the key to controlling airflow. They’re installed in the ductwork, and the amount you’ll need depends on the design of your ducts. A technician will decide this for you. Dampers can open or fully close, and you can install a modulating controller that opens and closes them partially.
Systems without zoning won’t monitor temperatures in multiple areas. An HVAC zoning system monitors the temperature in each zone for the ultimate control. There are two ways to set up thermostats to do this:
- Set up a thermostat in each zone to control and monitor temperature
- Install a multi-zone thermostat and sensors for each zone
We wire the motorized dampers and thermostats to the control panel. This panel allows multiple thermostats to control your HVAC unit. The control panel receives information about each zone’s desired temperature and controls the dampers to create an airflow to reach the desired result.
What exactly is an HVAC zoning system in Kansas City?
An HVAC zoning system is a heating and cooling system that uses dampers to regulate air flow to specific areas. As a result, you can customize the temperature of specific zones.
When is the best time to get an HVAC zoning system?
There’s not necessarily a “best time,” but adding a zoning system when you’re first building a house is ideal. In doing so, a technician can design ductwork that doesn’t require as many dampers, which can save you money during installation.
How much will zoning my home cost?
The cost to zone your home is going to vary from person to person. Some people need more dampers than others, which will obviously cost more. If there are parts that have to be replaced in your current system, that’s also going to up the price. Contact one of our HVAC technicians to get an estimate!

What makes us different
Why an HVAC Zoning System is Right for Your Home
You have a multi-level home
If you have a two or more story home, it’s warmer upstairs. Heat rises, and an HVAC zoning system can account for that extra heat in the upper level of the home and balance the temperature between levels.
You have vaulted or cathedral ceilings
First off, congratulations because these types of ceilings are beautiful. Anyway, sizable areas require extra air to heat and cool a room. This makes it a little more difficult to maintain the same temperatures between a room with vaulted ceilings and one without. An HVAC zoning system has the capabilities to keep these vastly different areas at the same temperature. Cozy!
You have large glass windows
Large windows are a gorgeous source for a natural sunlight mood boost. All of this extra sunlight affects the room’s temperature, and this room might need to be set at a lower or higher temperature than the rest of the house throughout the year. With a zoning system, you can have a naturally warm room be the same temperature as a room that tends to run cooler.
You have unused rooms
Do you have extra guest bedrooms? It makes little sense to keep an unused room at a comfortable temperature when no one is using it. A zoning system gives you the control to save money by keeping the temperature low or high throughout the year in unused areas.
You have a finished attic or basement
These two areas are notorious for being more difficult to heat and cool. Because basements are underground, they’ll require more heat than the main floor of the home. The inverse is true for attics. A zoning system allows you to keep temperatures comfortable in these areas without sacrificing temperatures in the main living space.
