How to Afford a New Furnace or Air Conditioner in Kansas City

March 10, 2015

Trying to figure out how to pay for a new air conditioner or furnace is daunting. Many Kansas City homeowners get sticker shock when they see what a new system can cost them.

Luckily, though, there are a number of ways you can afford a new furnace or air conditioner. Here are a few.

1. Know when to buy

If your AC or heating system is already past the point of repair, skip this step as you don’t have much choice.

Otherwise, the best time to buy a new heating and air conditioning system is in the spring (usually before April). This is when AC contractors are the least busy and offer the best deals. It’s also when many manufacturers offer the best rebates (see the next step).

2. Look for potential rebates

For Kansas City homeowners, there are 2 types of rebates available: manufacturer rebates and utility rebates.

Manufacturer rebates

Manufacturers of air conditioning and heating systems often offer rebates to entice you to purchase their system over a competing system. For example, York and Carrier frequently offer rebates for purchasing new, complete systems (both air conditioner and furnace).

Ask your contractor if there are any current rebates available.

Utility rebates

Many utility companies also offer rebates to their customers for upgrading to more efficient equipment.

For example, if you’re a Kansas City Power & Light (KCP&L) customer in Missouri, you could qualify for an $850 rebate on a new air conditioning system. Learn more here.
