We know it’s still summer, but now is the perfect time to make sure your furnace works. That way, you’re not stuck in the dead of winter covered in blankets and huddled around the fireplace. A best practice to avoid this problem is by getting annual check-ups through an HVAC professional.
Our heating experts at Santa Fe Air highly recommend that you start turning on your furnace now to see if it’s blowing hot air. However, if you find that your furnace is not heating, here are some of the most common culprits behind the issue.
1. Your thermostat doesn’t work
It is possible that your furnace is heating, but the thermostat isn’t properly reading the temperature. This could make you believe your furnace is faulty when the furnace isn’t to blame at all. In some cases, it may not trigger your heating system at all, which may be from an electrical or wiring issue.
Side note: Also make sure your thermostat is set to “heat” rather than “cool.”
2. You have dirty air filters
If your air filters are clogged with dirt, gunk, and debris, hot air won’t be able to circulate properly. Plus, it’ll make your furnace work a lot harder than it needs to just to keep up with the temperature set on your thermostat. Check your filters and change them if needed. This will also help you maintain your indoor air quality.
3. Your circuit breakers are tripped
If the circuit breakers that connect to your furnace are tripped, that means the power to your furnace has shut off. Go to your electrical panel and make sure everything’s okay. If the circuit has flipped off, flip it back on and try turning on your furnace again. However, if the circuit trips again, stop what you’re doing and call a professional. There could be a bigger issue going on.
4. You haven’t cleaned your air ducts
Your furnace could be blowing hot air just fine, but you’d never know if your air ducts are filthy. Clogged ducts can’t circulate air properly, which could make it seem like your furnace isn’t working. Whenever you’re vacuuming, be sure to clean out those ducts as well and see if it solves the problem.
5. Your furnace is old
Unfortunately, your furnace isn’t going to last forever. If your furnace is over a decade, it may be time to say goodbye… we know, it’s sad. The good news is that with a new furnace, your heating will be much more efficient, and you may even save on your energy bill each month.
