New Department of Energy Standards

This is the last year that you will be able to install an 80% efficient furnace

TG8S FurnaceThe Department of Energy has set new efficiency standards that will be in effect starting in May 2013. In Kansas and Missouri, the minimum efficiency for new furnace installations will be 90%. As a result of these standards, the manufactures will start reducing their inventory towards the end of 2012.

How Much Will I Save?

There is a substantial difference in the initial investment between an 80% and 90% efficient furnace. In fact, the average savings runs between $1200 and $1500. There could also be a problem with running vent pipe for a 90% furnace if yours is located in a finished basement, making the 80% efficient one more attractive. So if your budget or basement design doesn’t allow for a high efficiency option, now is your last chance! After May of 2013 or when the supplies run out, the less expensive furnace will no longer be an option.
