CARBON MONOXIDE (CO) – Important Facts that could save your life.

Did you know a CO Detector only has a life span of 2 – 5 years? Most people don’t, they assume that just like a smoke detector, as long as the battery is good, they work. CO Detectors have a sensor that fails with age. For your safety, all detectors should be tested annually to insure they are working. Our test kit has a shower type cap that we put over the detector; we spray a small amount of CO into the cap. The alarm will sound if your sensor is still working. Every year we find numerous furnaces that have a crack in the heat exchanger. This crack allows CO to seep into the living quarters of your home. CO is known as the silent killer because it is odorless, colorless, tasteless and poisonous. Its symptoms range from tiredness at low level exposure, to serious brain damage or death at high levels. The other possible sources of CO in your home could be a car left running in the garage, even if the garage door is open and a fireplace chimney not drafting properly. To insure that your heating system is operating properly, please have a qualified technician clean and inspect your equipment every year. He can test your CO Detector at the same time to insure it is still operating. Enjoy the changing of the seasons and be safe!
